Below in the introduction to this project originally published on February 2nd along with an email sent out to all families.
Last year, I came up with a fun learning experience combining Black History Month and a book report. The culminating activity for the two was an Interactive Black History Month Wax Museum. It was such a fun learning experience for them, and the school came through our gallery walks! This year, we are going to make it even better!
During time in class and at home, students will research a famous person of their choice. They will have the opportunity to present the information acquired from their biography books at an Interactive Black History Month Wax Museum. Essentially, students will “become” the person they study. They will dress up like their famous person (as much as possible), memorize a short speech about their person, and pose as statues during a gallery walk. Students will have stickers placed on their hands to represent buttons, and they will come “alive” when it is pushed to give an autobiographical account of their “life” as that person.
Please discuss with your child famous person they are interested in learning more about. I have included a link below from Enchanted Learning that has Bios of African-Americans to get started. There are only approximately 30 Bios on this page, so please only use this as a jumping off point.
Since each student will have to choose a different famous person, I will give approval to students on first come, first serve basis. I am asking everyone to have this done by Thursday to allow time to go to the library to check out a biography book. When checking out a biography, please make sure it is in the youth section and at the reading level of your child. It might be a good idea to check out several books. Students will need their books in school by Monday, February 9th to start our class research.
Famous People Already Approved for a Student
1. Booker T. Washington
2 James Earl Jones
3. Jackie Robinson
Please fill out the form below to submit your child's choice or they can answer the same questions on a sheet of paper and bring it to class.
